Tours

As a history museum, we offer immersive, transformative tours where students not only encounter history, but further analyze important questions about social justice, and think about how they can build a more dignified and humane world. 

Museum tours are for 5th grade and above and aligned with the California Common Core Standards. 

As mandated by the Museum's founding survivors, all student tours are free. To continue providing free Holocaust education programming, we appreciate donations.

Tours are docent-led and inquiry-based. Museum educators engage students through discussion, reflection, and analysis of exhibitions and primary source artifacts. All tours include an opportunity to meet with and hear from a Holocaust survivor.

How much does a tour cost?

As mandated by the Holocaust survivors who founded the Museum, education programs and tours are always free of charge. If you are interested in making a donation to the Museum, we recommend $118 for a docent-led tour.

 

What does a tour of the Museum include?

Please allow 3 hours for a full Museum tour, which includes 1.5 hours with a docent in the galleries and about 1.5 hours reflecting with a survivor who will share their story and answer your students’ questions. 

 

What are the age requirements for tours?

ours are designed for students in grades 5 and up. All tours are customizable depending on your students age and knowledge on the subject. Please let us know of any special requests a head of time.  

 

What time can my tour start?

We offer tours 7 days a week. We recommend that scheduled group tours begin at 10:00am. We can also accommodate tours at 11:00am, 11:30am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm. If you are coming from surrounding counties, please plan on starting your tour no earlier than 11:00am. 

 

I don't want a guided tour for my group. Do I have to make a reservation?

We require reservations for all school groups, regardless of size, age and time of day. If available, we do allow groups to walk through the galleries on their own, however this is not guaranteed and must be approved with the Director of Museum Tours.

 

How can I prepare my students for the visit?

We have several tools to help prepare your students to tour the Museum, meet a Holocaust survivor, and reflect once you’re back in the classroom. You can find them here.

 

How far in advance should I make reservations for my group?

We require a request of at least 2 weeks before your ideal tour date, however tours fill up extremely quickly, so we recommend filling out a reservation form as soon as possible. You can fill out a reservation form here.

 

How many students can I bring?
Our capacity is 160 students for a 3-hour tour (not including chaperones). We have a minimum of 15 students for a docent led tour.

 

How many chaperones should I bring?

We require 1 chaperone per 15 students.

 

Will my students be the only group on the floor?

If you have a smaller group, there may be other student groups in the Museum at the same time. Schools are kept in separate docent-led tours, but the groups may join together to learn from a Holocaust survivor.

 

Is there a place for my group to eat lunch? 

There is no cafeteria on site, and no food or drink other than water is allowed in the Museum gallery space. The Museum is located in the beautiful Pan Pacific Park which has ample space for your students to eat a sack lunch either before or after their tour. There is no time allotted during the tour to eat. If you are looking for a place to buy lunch, we are located across the street from The Grove and the Original Farmers Market. 

 

What security procedures do you have?

We request that students leave the following items on the bus or in personal cars: backpacks, purses, all electronic devices, pens and markers, all food, candy, beverages (excepting water), chewing gum, sharp objects and mace. Students with medical conditions may carry supplies with them. Chaperones may carry a backpack or purse.

 

Can I take pictures? 

Yes, we request that you turn off your flash when doing so. 

 

Do you provide funding to cover the cost of transportation to the Museum?

Yes! We provide Transportation grants for Title I schools from the following counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura Counties. Your school must have Title I school-wide status and/or 50% or more of the student population must receive free or reduced lunch. We also provide Transportation Grants regardless of Title I status to San Diego schools. The Transportation Grant form also serves as your reservation form.
