Holocaust Survivor Talk: Ernest Weiss
Ernest was born in Munkacs, Czechoslovakia in 1927. He had two older brothers. In November 1938, as part of the First Vienna Award, Munkacs became Hungarian territory. In 1942, his oldest brother was sent to forced labor. Two years later, in 1944, Nazi Germany invaded Hungary.

Ernest and his family were first sent to live in the Munkacs Ghetto and later deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. From there, Ernest, his brother and father were sent to Warsaw to clean up the aftermath of the Uprising. Eventually, he was separated from his brother and father. He was liberated by American troops in 1945 and after the war, he reunited with his surviving brother. Ernest immigrated to the United States in the 1950s and worked for Douglas Aircraft.
