About

Since her father was a businessman, the Communist regime branded him a danger to the state, which prompted her family to hide their identities and flee to Lwow. In June 1941, Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Gerda's family were sent to live in a ghetto. Gerda’s father arranged for her to go into hiding, saving her from deportation to death camps. After the war, a British rabbi arranged for Gerda and other war orphans to come to London, where she trained as a nurse. She moved to the United States in 1951 and raised her family in Long Beach, California.
