About

Gerda was twelve years old when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Soon after the war broke out, the Soviet Union invaded her family's city of Przemysl in Eastern Poland, and the family fled to Lwow, where they hid their identities. In June 1941, Nazi Germany invaded, and Gerda's family spent a few months living in a ghetto. Eventually, her father arranged for her to hide with Polish families, which saved her from deportation to death camps. After the war, a British rabbi arranged for her and other war orphans to come to London, where she trained as a nurse. She moved to the United States in 1951, and raised her family in Long Beach, California.
