About
Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust

The Great Dictator
One year before the US entered World War II, celebrated comedic actor and filmmaker Charles Chaplin released his first full-sound motion picture, playing a thinly veiled version of Austro-German dictator Adolf Hitler. To underscore the fine line separating the tyrant and the tormented, Chaplin plays two characters: dictator Adenoid Hynkel and a humble Jewish soldier and barber, slipping between roles with his unique and unmatched physicality. In the eight decades since its release, The Great Dictator has grown in acclaim and remains one of Chaplin’s most politically charged and important works.. Watch the trailer HERE.
Talk back between the films by Dr. Michael Berenbaum.
