Lya Frank was born in 1936 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. On her seventh birthday in 1943, her parents put her and her younger sister into separate hiding homes. Lya was taken in by a caring family in the nearby city of Amserfoort. She was taught to never reveal her hidden Jewish identity. After the Holocaust, her only surviving uncle found her and reunited her and her sister.
